Finally! A second edition of Books To Read!
I have to say, in a way it’s a good thing that this is only the second, I’ve been really trying to try to read through my unread book stack (which, I distressingly realized one day while organizing, is almost half of my library) and to also save money, but I don’t know it being Christmas, and it being that it was someone’s birthday, and it being that it’s been like 6 months since I’ve bought a book, I think my hold out was long enough and due for some kind of reward.
But man, the first used bookstore I went to, really really disappointing. I don’t know if it was because I hadn’t been to a used bookstore in awhile, that I apparently don’t really know what to read anymore, but I just couldn’t find anything. And they were even having a great sale, buy 2 books and get 1 free! But then I was looking in the sci-fi section to find a book for my brother, and I remembered that oh, I really love books by John Wyndham, and there was this book of short stories there that I’ve never seen. And it was old penguin design! Old British Penguin design. That bookstore then officially redeemed itself. And it me…want to buy more.
Then went on to another bookstore and found a couple of the new Penguin Modern Classics (lovely white spine and big san serif type and beautiful photography). I don’t even know what these books are about. I don’t even know if I’ll read them. Not anytime soon at least. But they sure are nice to look at.
And then! This. This is what I love about buying books at a used bookstore, I was just picking through a stack, not really thinking, not really caring, and there it was. A book that I’ve heard of, that inspired a great movie, that is supposed to be really good, something that isn’t really seen that often used, something I’d never think I’d see. Oil! by Upton Sinclair.
It was a good book to end the day on.
And to end this on.
